Zenus wanted to launch a developer portal that would enable their customers to onboard faster to the Zenus APIs, and run various tests before going to production.
Building a reliable, easy to use API playground based on realistic mock APIs
Zenus’ customer-facing developer portal would contain documentation and a playground environment in which they can run API calls against a mock server, allowing them to get hands-on experience and check different responses and scenarios.
In order to do so, Zenus needed a solution that would provide reliable and realistic mock responses for an evolving set of APIs. They were looking for a tool that would:
remove the need to develop the mock server backend internally
be quick to modify and easy to maintain
allow developers to test complex scenarios including dynamic responses, templating, and faults

Embedding WireMock as a mock backend server in Zenus’ API playground
WireMock provided the flexibility Zenus needed to easily build their developer portal backend and enable smooth onboarding for their customers. Today Zenus can rapidly spin up new API mocks when they release new features or APIs, and make changes by simply modifying the Swagger definition.
Every Zenus API has a corresponding mock in WireMock. As the real banking APIs evolve, developers can easily keep the mock APIs up to date. The mock server supports the full functionality of WireMock Cloud, including dynamic templating, the ability to simulate real-life data, and realistic testing of edge cases and fault scenarios.
During new customer onboarding or when an updated API is released, Zenus Bank’s customers can use the WireMock-powered API playground to reliably validate their code and move to production when they’re ready. This helps customers develop their use cases successfully, which drives user retention for Zenus Bank.
